100 Wasser
100 Wasser - Simon-Dach Str. / Krossener Str., Friedrichshain (Brunch 8.50 euros, reservations require a 5 euro deposit per person)
A small posse of brunching enthusiasts trucked down to Friedrichshain's Simon-Dach Straße once again and threw themselves into Hundertwasser's amazing buffet this Sunday.

The Hundertwasser scene
Es ist wieder so weit!* Well, spring may finally be on its way, but the end of the month is fast approaching, too. For me that means watching the pennies, so while I was excited to be going to brunch at Hundertwasser I was a little concerned about how my finances would look after all that opulence. Would I come out of the experience drowning in Milchkaffee, but without enough money to buy milk? I needn’t have worried – although it doesn’t quite fall into the bargain basement of brunches, it’s better value for money that one might think at first glance. The food ain’t bad either!!
Hundertwasser is a large, prettily decorated and packed café, and given the popularity of its brunch, one could be forgiven for expecting a long wait on the drinks side of things. For how could so few be expected to provide coffee and tea to so many? Well, they’ve been a little innovative here, and have provided free self-service coffee and tea as part of the brunch. This saved me a fortune in coffee, made the experience considerably more relaxed than one could expect, and meant that the staff could focus on keeping the buffet well-stocked.
Keeping the focus on the food is definitely a good move here, because it is really excellent. For someone like me, with a liking for savoury, veggie foods, it provided great nourishment – I filled my plate with olives, stuffed vine leaves and a variety of flavoured sheep-cheese pastes on the first round and returned on the second round for Greek salad, bean salad, tempura and some deliciously flavoured artichoke hearts. I returned a little later to sample their selection of yoghurts, and completed the experience with peppermint tea and conversation. We hung around for a few relaxed hours, eating and chatting, and the fact that we didn’t have to kidnap a member of the waitstaff any time we needed something to drink made the experience pretty chilling.
Still, though, while I found myself comfortably relaxed here, I was not exactly horizontal. The place is really packed, there was not that much room to stretch out and the buffet was always busy. The popularity of this brunch also meant that we had to book a few days ahead of time, and leave a deposit for each member of our brunching crew. This makes the brunch at Hundertwasser a brunch for the truly committed. Perhaps the man himself would have approved…..Roisin

A very important tip when planning your Simon-Dach Sunday brunch

So far, in my opinion, the food was across the board the best so far. I skipped over the crowded breakfast and salad table for the hot foods on my first round, and they were so fantastic, I went back for another full plate later. The indian dishes and tempura were awesome. When I did finally part the crowds and elbow my way onto the salad table, I was just as delighted, everything was incredibly tasty, and many dishes so unique. The creamy spreads were all fantastic, but my tummy was swiftly becoming overwhelmed with so many fantastic choices. The muesli display was the biggest I have seen yet, and once again overwhelmed my full gullet. Overall, I loved how amazing everything tasted, and am a huge fan of the coffee and tea that come with brunch, that was heavenly for the liquid obsessed pisces that I happen to be. The flaws of it all? Too many people and too much good food. But I have to give an extra special thumbs up for the restaurant's namesake. I'm such a big fan of the beautiful Friedensreich Hundertwasser that I plan to name my babies after him. No, really. I'm not kidding.
